| USAID Assistance to Jordan |
|
Despite budget cuts in USAID programs elsewhere, U.S. economic assistance to Jordan has increased dramatically over the past decade – from $7.2 million in 1996 to an average annual funding of $250 million. The expanded program stems, in a large part, from an announcement made in 1997 to acknowledge the importance of providing additional resources for countries making a positive contribution to the peace in the region. Since that time, Jordan has been an important partner for the U.S. in the Middle East, making it one of the five largest recipients of USAID funds worldwide.
- The USAID program in Jordan is funded from Economic Support Funds (ESF) account.
- In October 2007, USAID/Jordan initiated a new five-year Country Strategy for FY2007-2011.
- Total economic assistance provided to Jordan since 1952 now exceeds $5 billion.
- Total economic assistance provided to Jordan since 1997 alone is nearly $3.3 billion.
